Recruitment

We have successfully gone through this semester’s initiation. Out of a 15 member pledge class, 12 became new initiates, nearly doubling our chapter size from 13 to 25! We, in fact, initiated more than any other fraternity here at Nebraska Wesleyan this semester. We’re still working on recruitment, however, so that number shall certainly go up more before the end of the school year.
This new freshman class of Theta Chis are a hardworking bunch, and have already taken steps in helping improve our chapter and our house as a whole. They will most definitely have great influence and determination here in the coming years.
Also, as one final note, we have two legacies in this new group! Nathan Kramer and Patrick Reerink are both descendants of Theta Chis. We’re glad to see the membership passing on to other generations.

House Improvements

New Gutters installed to control water runoff.
Nebraskaland came out to install some guttering to direct the water from the roof away from the foundation. This also will keep water from pouring over the front entrance This should help keep water from pooling on the front porch and potentially freezing and from running down the foundation and washing out some of the dirt surrounding the house.

Room #4 gets a face lift.

The room was gutted, we took off the drywall on the exterior walls to expose any potential problems. Patched the holes and gave it a coat of paint. Ready for new actives to move in at Christmas break.

Internally, incredible improvements have been made to the entertainment facilities in the basement of the house. New floors were installed, as well as new carpet and furnishings. This facelift was the centerpiece of recruitment house tours and without a doubt helped recruit a larger class of new brothers. Brothers are often seen in the basement; whether they are watching television, playing recreational games like foosball or billiards, or participating in a friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em. We encourage all alumni who are interested to stop by anytime and take a peek at the impressive work we have accomplished over the last semester. The Gamma Phi house is looking better than ever, and everything seems to be looking up from there.

Philanthropy and Service

On September 30, the men of Theta Chi hosted the Waffleman philanthropy at the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln. Members sold tickets and helped the Waffleman by mixing batter, cooking sausages, making whipped topping, and serving drinks. Overall the philanthropy was a success, with around 160 people attending and $686 raised which will be donated to Relay for Life.
Meanwhile, during the last couple of months, the chapter has participated in a couple of service events. First was a highway cleanup, where members picked up trash across around a mile-long stretch of highway ditches. Second, we assisted the grounds keeping crew here at Wesleyan with storing various flowers and other plants for the winter in order to keep our campus’ landscaping ready to go for next spring.

Homecoming 2014 recap

The 2014 Homecoming was a great success with great memories and challenges put forth for the current members of Theta Chi. The honor classes of 2004, 1989 & 1964 showed up to reminisce about the 'good ol days'. We pulled down the composites and compared what you looked like then to now...just like a fine wine right, better with age.

We honored two of our distinguished alumni this weekend. Dr. Jim Lightbody '54 and Mr. Sidney Meridith '62. Both received the George T. Kilavos Alumni Award. This award is made to those who, by reason of exceptional service, personal effort, and unselfish interest, have made meritorious contributions to the local, regional, or national general welfare of Theta Chi Fraternity.

Initiation was held at Old main that afternoon, installing 12 new members to the fraternity. Alumni showed up for the ceremony and Andrew Kramer '95 was able to help install his son Nathan Kramer '18. Currently we have a third generation legacy in the chapter house, Sheffer Harbert '17 son of Thomas Harbert '84 son of Roger Harbert '57.

Summer Updates 2014

The summer was filled with work around the fraternity house.
A work day was scheduled with the alumni and actives moving back into the house. Over the summer a remodel of the game room downstairs involved a new wood floor, bar renovation and a sitting area with flat-screen tv (furniture furnished by brother Swanson from Ernie's in Ceresco). The bathrooms were cleaned up and updated with a modern zen feel. The lawn had a professional manicure by brothers; Bernie Heier, Phil Larsen and Steve Wylie. National convention happened and read below to find out how the men did this year. Don't forget Homecoming is right around the corner on Saturday Oct. 11th. Honor classes are 2004, 1989 & 1964, plus individual honors to some alumni for their contributions to the fraternity.

It’s nothing big, but when Brother Andrew Reuss first brought me over to the house for the first time when I was still just looking at the Greek system at Wesleyan. I was pretty skeptical because of all the negative stereotypes that go along with Greek life, I was thinking that all Greek guys were “Frattastic”, so I was kinda brushing it all off. However Brother Reuss showed me that it wasn’t like that I came over and it was just him and a few other brothers gaming on a Friday night, not partying or doing anything like that but they were doing the things that I liked to do as well, so that’s what really got me interested was seeing Fraternity guys, being well in my opinion normal. I mean this wasn’t really a big life event like some of the others memories but it was one of my favorite memories from Theta Chi.

Nebraska Wesleyan University's oldest alumnus has died at the age of 105. Harold Weary was a father of three, grand father of five and great-grandfather of 12.
At the dawn of the great depression in 1929, Harold handed over his college savings to his parents to help them keep the family farm in Kansas. He traveled to Nebraska to attend NWU anyway, and his gratitude for the help he received along the way was lifelong. His giving history to NWU spanned 80 years. He worked as a financial project manager for United Airlines for 32 years. In retirement, he was a devoted volunteer for the Mount Prospect Library, logging more than 10,000 hours of service.

Needless to say, college life was full of parties and other social events. I fondly remember those
Sunday mornings when we escorted one of the sororities to church after an occassional night of
frivolity and libation. Making one’s self presentable was a challenge, particularly the task of disguising what I had indulged in the night before. I haven’t chewed that much gum since.

NWU Students Post Big Fat Greek GPA
We've long known that Nebraska Wesleyan's Greek system is filled with strong students. The North-American Interfraternity Conference Just provided another way to prove it. It released a list of the continent's top fraternity community GPAs for the 2012-2013 academic year, and Nebraska Wesleyan University ranks fifth. So who are we behind?
  1. Rockhurst University 3.46
  2. Washington University 3.44
  3. Vanderbilt University 3.405
  4. University of Pennsylvania 3.366
  5. NWU 3.32
So where does Theta Chi fall in the ranks? 3.36 GPA!

Hobbies: Running Track and Cross Country for the NWU Prairie Wolves, reading large tomes, and socializing.
Memory: When we had a race between two guys in the house last spring it was quite the spectacle to behold. We went up to the track to make it a level playing field, and there was a little kid track meet going on, so we went to the backstretch of the track. Right before the race it started pouring rain, so one of the racists (racers? who knows) took his shirt off. At the end of the track there were several small children who were cowering in fear because of the hairy, wet, shirtless man that had just ran towards them victorious. Needless to say, it was pretty entertaining.

 THETA CHI GAMMA PHI BLOG

We have a new website address!

www.NWUTHETACHI.org

Similar to the national headquarters address of ThetaChi.org we just put the NWU in front. This use to be our old website address, but was discontinued by the chapter. You can still access through thetachigammaphi.blogspot.com but this address is easier to remember and not so much to type. Plus we will be in the search engines for any brother that is looking for us.

Message from the Building Corporation President:

Well here is our first shot at doing a monthly blog, getting it planned out for the year to keep you updated on what is going on around the fraternity and with the alumni. Big surprise I lead off with the Capital Campaign, we only have a couple years left to contact all of the alumni. We have cleaned up most of the physical mailing address and emails, next up will be the phone numbers. So be on the look out for an automated call from us to see if the number we have still works. You can donate online, see the link above. Also you can check out the Actives wish list above. This is a list of small things most people have extra of in their house or things the chapter is looking to replace.

Earlier this week I was invited to Monday night dinner with the actives to go over what Building Corporation is and who is on, what it does, future plans and what it wants to see from the chapter house. They had some great questions and seemed concerned for the future of the house even after they graduate, so we have some strong alumni in the making.

In these blogs we will be spotlighting Actives, Alumni and Board members. So if you want to be spotlighted please send me your information and a picture to oxgammaphi@gmail.com, or visit the update page.

There will be a Building Corporation Board meeting next week, if you would like to attend please let me know, or if you are interested in a position on the Building Corporation. Other areas of involvement are Chapter Advisory Board, and Alumni committee.
