Meet our new House Mom

Katie Kodad

Theta Chi House Mom

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I had a great student experience during my undergraduate career and knew that I wanted to be a positive resource for college students, so after teaching in Lincoln Public Schools for a semester, I returned to the University, where I have worked in Admissions and with the William H. Thompson Scholars Learning Community. I am currently working on my Master’s degree in Educational Administration, so I can be a resource for students both in their academic success and personal development. I absolutely love playing sports and going to sporting events. I also enjoy traveling and am very excited to be the new House Mom for Theta Chi!

Alumni/Actives Workdays 2017

Brothers,

On behalf of the Building Corporation, I want to express our sincere appreciation to everyone for their invaluable efforts during the Work Weekend. Together we are making unprecedented improvements to the Theta Chi House and its property.  Certainly over the last few years the changes have been noticeable and with the potential of the mortgage being retired, future improvements can be addressed in a more timely fashion.

On a personal note, I want to express my sincere thanks to Dan Novinsky and Fred Garvey, for keeping us on task and to alums Bill Shreffler, Buzz Selko, Larry Ruth, Cody Schilling and Jerry Clark for their individual work efforts. It is greatly appreciated.

I look forward to next year's Work Weekend and all the fun that goes with it. Happy shuffle boarding!

2017 KC All Class Reunion

Summer 2017 & Reunion recap

The weekend of June 1st-4th, the decade of 1960s hosted an all class Gamma Phi reunion in Kansas City. Events were Thursday night, cocktail party with BBQ dinner at Jerry Clark's home. Friday - KC trolley tours, lunch at Union Station, World Ware I museum, Steamboat museum, Negro Baseball hall of fame, downtown KC, Power & Light district. Followed by an evening of The Tom Kuhn '64 Memorial Shuffleboard tournament for the coveted Skylane Cup. Saturday was Kansas City Royals baseball in the George Brett Suite hosted by Sid Meredith's company SEI (Royals won!). Followed up that evening with shopping and dinner in the Crown Plaza. Sunday was a Theta Chi sextet concert at church.
There was representatives from every decade in attendance, 1950s through 2010s graduates and three actives made the trip to join us.

Tom Kuhn '64 Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament

Do you believe in miracles?
Because that's what the Theta Chi active's shuffleboard team looked like they needed to defeat the mighty Jerry & Sid machine at the 2017 Tom Kuhn Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament in Kansas City. Team Dan & Joe had never played shuffleboard before the tournament, but the roster was filled with amateurs and collegiate athletes. In contrast, the battle-tested Senior squad boasted of some of the best Shuffleboard talent in the world. The Senior team has dominated for years, and even the most hopeful fans wondered if the Actives could even score in the game, let alone win.
Instead, Team Dan & Joe pulled off an amazing upset, winning the game 10-8 and earning themselves a place in history. The game inspired what is now one of the most recognizable broadcast calls in history, as Bill Lundy Sr. screamed that he did, in fact, believe in miracles. By the way Bill did offer Dan & Joe $50 a piece if they beat the defending champs. So Bill was very pleased when he and Don did not have to meet Jerry & Sid in the finals.

Mom Pat (1931-2017)

Obituary for Patsy L. Turek
Patsy L. Turek, 85, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017. Memorial service is 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2017, at Lincoln Family Funeral Care, 5844 Fremont St. Lincoln, Nebraska.

Patsy L. Turek was born August 22, 1931 in Columbus, Nebraska, the daughter of Leo and Lillian (Geiser) Paprocki. Patsy was a cook at the University of Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan University before becoming a house mother at Theta Chi Fraternity (NWU). Patsy was a house mother for 12 years and she loved all of her boys dearly. You could always find Pasty cheering on her two favorite teams, the Nebraska Huskers and Oregon Ducks. She also enjoyed cooking and playing cards, but most importantly, she loved spending time with her family.

Patsy is survived by her children, Gregory (Eileen) Turek of Bend, OR, Pamela Joekel of Omaha, NE, and Debra (Michael) Michel of Lincoln, NE, grandchildren, Cindy Turek of Lincoln, NE, Erin (Jeremy) Stoll of Omaha, NE, David (Tiffany) Joekel of Omaha, NE, Stephanie (Scott) Wenz of Omaha, NE, Cassie (Randy) Donathan of Fort Gordon, GA, Becca (Randy) Turek-Ross of Germany, Mark Joekel of Minneapolis, MN, Alex (Julia) Turek of Crooked River, OR, Michaela Michel of Lincoln, NE, and Ethan Turek of Bend, OR, and twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Paprocki, and three sisters, Doris Kentzel, Emogene Walters, and Margy Swalec.
Brothers,
I'm sad to pass along the news that Patsy "Mom Pat" Turek passed away this pst Friday. Mom Pat was the housemother of the Gamma Phi Chapter from 1990-2002 and took care of many of us during her time there - including me, her oldest grandson which made my fraternity experience that much more special. Our family invites any of you who were one of her "boys", or friends, to join us for thefuneral service to honor her and share stories.

The funeral will be this Thursday Feb. 16th - 2pm - at Lincoln Family Funeral Care. 5844 Fremont St, Lincoln, NE. Please share with other brothers not in this group or that may be around your class.

If anyone is interested in gathering at the Chapter house following the service, we may have an informal remembrance or quick ceremony for those that are able. Stay tuned for more details on that.

This picture is from a "Prom" held recently at her retirement home, I thought it was fitting as you all know she never missed a party and loved celebrating with us. So we'll do it one more time with Mom Pat.

If you can't join us, please consider sharing a story or memory in the comments below - or email me at David.joekel@gmail.com so we can share them during the service.
