Bathroom Renovation Progression

Bathroom Renovation Progression

Thanks to the "Beat the Match" fundraising campaign from our Anonymous Alumni we are in the process of renovating all 7 bathrooms. A facebook poll showed that room 3 & 4 had the 2nd worst bathroom that you guys could remember. Here are some before pictures, I will add more to the website and facebook group.  You will note that thanks to Jerry Clark, 1960 all of the toilets and the urinal in the men's basement bathroom have been replace! We are finishing lining up all of the contractors this week so we can start on the projects. We can't wait to share the pictures with you. And will all the heavy lifting being done by professionals our Annual Alumni & Actives workdays will be a lot lighter. Not saying we don't need your help, but it will be a slower more enjoyable pace where we will have more time to remind the actives of the 'good ol days'. With the start of the school year moved us we are working on a weekend to do this, we will let you know when it is finalized. Check the website (www.NWUThetaChi.org).

COVID-19 (coronavirus) Update

The health and safety of our students and staff is always a top concern.
As state and local health officials address the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Building Corporation of Theta Chi Gamma Phi at Nebraska Wesleyan University is monitoring the situation, discussing guidelines and implementing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department.
Dear Alumni, Actives & Pledges,
As our country continues to deal with Covid-19, I wanted to share with you the decisions made by the Building Corporation this past weekend in response to the pandemic.
First and foremost, I want to commend Chapter President Hunter Smith, the Chapter Advisor Dustin Bartley and the Chapter House Mother Katie Kodad and the students for putting health and safety at the forefront. I assure you the Building Corporation did not take the decision lightly to close the chapter house to the students. As of April 1st all students are required to move out of the chapter house. House mother Katie Kodad will remain on the property to oversee the safety of the facility.
As this crisis continues to unfold, we all ask ourselves, what’s next? We don’t know those answers and we may not know them for a while. What we do know is that we are planning for the worst and moving ahead as if the Fall semester is right around the corner and the 45 members will be moving back into the house. Summer reunion planned for June at Round the Bend Steakhouse may be pushed back. Homecoming is still on as is the 2021 reunion in Monterey, California.
All of us on the Building Corporation care deeply about Theta Chi. We come from varied backgrounds in the public and private sectors – health care, education, government, business, and retirees just to name a few. We empathize with the uncertainties and challenges everyone is facing because we are facing them too.
Please continue to extend a helping hand to others.
If you have comments or questions, please feel free to let me know. My email is trentmaly@gmail.com
Fraternally,
Dr. Trent Maly ‘00

The Rev. Dr. William Wallace McDermet, III

The Rev. Dr. William Wallace McDermet, III

Feb 21, 1936—March 3, 2020, Woodlands at Hillcrest, Lincoln. Bill was born to William McDermet and Grace Eleta Lowe at York and lived in Lincoln for 21 years, graduating from Lincoln High. As a very shy freshman he entered Nebraska Wesleyan, feeling that he knew no one. He pledged Theta Chi Fraternity and friendships increased, some of which exist today. He earned the “Most improved scholarship” award the next year at his fraternity, graduating from Wesleyan in 1957. He always felt that his four years at Wesleyan were top-notch.  O and X look like the Greek letters for Theta Chi on his baseball cap.  So to church youth groups he became Pastor “OX.”  Later he became “Grandpa OX” to the grandchildren.
OX and Sheral Adene Yates were married on August 24, 1957 at the Bethany Christian church and then departed for Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, from which he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1960. He also received a Doctor of Ministry degree with Theta Phi scholarship honors in 1977 at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis.
He was a serious advocate for world peace and justice, often speaking out against racism, war and other forms of violence.  He served churches at United Christian and Baptist (Kalona, Iowa) Blue Ridge Blvd (Independence, MO), First Christian (McPherson, KS) and 14 years at Downey Ave Christian Church (Indianapolis, IN). He served in numerous interim church positions when they owned the Mason House Inn B&B, Bentonsport, IA in retirement, where they also made more lasting friendships. He was also a Husker and St. Louis Cardinals fan and although dementia later robbed him of speech he was always an avid coach of the games on TV.
He is survived by his wife Sheral and four children: Stephanie (Chuck) Malancuk, Melanie McDermet (Jeff Foster), Kimberly McDermet, and William (Marie) McDermet IV. Four grandchildren: Brian Malancuk, Kori McDermet, Clare McDermet and Julia McDermet. Four great grandchildren: Sami, Tobi, Leon and Sylvi Malancuk. Brothers Stewart (Kristen) McDermet, Staley (Mary Beth) McDermet, brother-in-law Alan (Susan) Yates, nieces-in-law: Kristin Yates and Christina Falci.
A celebration of Life and burial of cremains will be held later this spring.

Monday Night Formal Dinner

Hello Theta Chi alumni friends,

I wanted to share a photo taken Monday night when Diana and I were invited to the Theta Chi formal dinner.  We had a wonderful evening of community-building and conversation.  What a truly outstanding group of gentlemen.
As you can see, I am including Greg Bergt with whom I had to pleasure to eat lunch and get to know better yesterday in Omaha (along with his lovely wife, Diann, and Mary Hawk).  You Theta Chis are an impressive bunch!
Cheers,
Darrin Good, Ph.D.
